This beautifully designed book is about the making of Charlotte Spencer Projects’ production of Is this a Waste Land? It is written for anyone interested in reading about choreographic creative processes.

Is this a Waste Land? was a critically acclaimed performance through headphones designed for up to one hundred people to experience together in disused urban spaces. Not sitting and spectating, but being in and with the action as it unfolded, it was an absorbing interactive performance that invited audiences to re-imagine how they value land, a feeling of home and community. Playing with autonomy, co-responsibility, authority, community, the public and private it asked questions about how we might find hope in the midst of uncertainty and crisis and how we can be together even in complicated times.

This book shares that creative process as an up-close encounter for readers documenting revelations, excitements, successes, questions, dead ends, uncertainties, failures and delights. Written from the perspective of the maker, it is a personal, honest account that shares how choreographic, practical and financial decisions were made.

The book is both specific to the making of Is this a Waste Land? and also speaks to the universal experiences of doubt, chaos, decision making, responsibility and care that are involved in making collaborative work. It aims to support other choreographers or performance makers as they embark on equally ambitious and unusual ground.

Sensitively designed by Daniella and Richard of Studio Valle Walkley, it is full of images, journal notes, maps, and fold out pages on a variety of different paper stocks for you to explore and enjoy.

This publication has been a long time in the making, we hope that you love it as much as we do.

PRICING
To give you an idea, it costs us £49 per book to cover the cost of the printing (and a whopping £180 per copy for the total cost of writing, designing, editing, producing, printing & launching!). We understand that for people with lower incomes that is too much, and we are keen for this book to be affordable.

So we’ve devised a sliding scale model: you choose how much to pay.
